Take rate
Also called: commission rate
The share of GMV a marketplace keeps as its own revenue: platform revenue divided by GMV.
FormulaTake rate = platform commission ÷ GMV
Try it · 30 seconds · from Atterna’s practice
“Paid orders totalled €552,645 in gross merchandise value (GMV).”
Can you infer the platform’s own revenue from that number?

How we work it through
- 1
Compute it as one ratio of totals, not as an average of rates.
- 2
Check the mix: big sellers on low rates pull the real rate below the average rate.
- 3
When it moves, split the change into rate changes and mix changes before blaming anyone.
On the practice dataset
The query we run on Meridian, Atterna’s practice marketplace, and what it returns.
SELECT SUM(o.items_total_eur * s.commission_rate)
/ SUM(o.items_total_eur) AS take_rate
FROM meridian.orders o
JOIN meridian.sellers s ON s.seller_id = o.seller_id
WHERE o.status = 'paid';Result12.1% (€67,040 of €552,645). The plain average of the 36 sellers’ rates is 13.7%.
The common trap
Averaging sellers’ commission rates instead of dividing total commission by total GMV.
ExampleMeridian: €67,040 of €552,645, a take rate of 12.1%.
When an AI answers
“Our take rate is 13.7%.”
- What it didn’t know
- It averaged the commission_rate column and did not weigh sellers by how much they sell.
- Ask back
- “Is that the average of sellers’ rates or total commission divided by total GMV?”
